Tractor Supply Company

Tractor Supply Company is a publicly traded American retail company that is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol TSCO.   Led by CEO James F. Wright, the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company specializes in home improvement, lawn and garden maintenance, horse and pet care, livestock, and agriculture products and is a leading U.S. retailer.

Today, the Tractor Supply Company employs nearly 10,000 workers at 800 locations in the U.S. and Canada.  The company reported revenues exceeding $1.7 billion in 2004, leading Fortune magazine to name Tractor Supply Co. to its list of “100 fastest growing businesses.”  Since then, the firm has reported revenues over $2 billion.  The company has been around for over 70 years and began operating as a mail order business in Minot, North Dakota in 1938 for farmers wanting and in need of replacement parts for their agricultural equipment and tractors. Since those early days, the company has evolved in its approach to the market while remaining true to its core constituents.   It now services not only full time commercial farmers, but hobbyists, private homeowners, and want-to-be handy-men/farmers.   Today, fewer than 10 percent of the customers at Tractor Supply Company identify themselves as professional farmers or ranchers; the majority of the company’s clients do not farm at all.  Nevertheless, the hobby and pleasure farmer market is still lucrative – estimates put annual U.S. farm supplies for this market at more than $5.5 billion.

Tractor Supply Company remains committed to fulfilling their customer’s needs by providing an authentic, genuine agriculture experience for their customers.  In each store, the Tractor Supply Company employs a welder, a horse owner and a farmer in order to give customers access to legitimate and knowledgeable staff. Given the company’s strong history and grass roots base in agriculture, it is hardly surprising that when surveyed most market consumers reported that the Tractor Supply Company was a brand they associated with the principles of honesty and good quality.

An average Tractor supply store is between 15,000 and 24,000 square feet of interior retail space and another 20,000 in exterior space to display fencing, horse stalls and livestock equipment.  The only tractor-related item TSC does not carry is the tractor itself. Tractor Supply Company carries a range of agricultural products (pesticides/herbicides etcetera), as well as farm equipment, personal home equipment, tools, fencing materials, lawn and garden products, clothing (men’s & women’s), pet and livestock items (such as feed), maintenance equipment (engines, compressors, welders etc) and other farm and agricultural products. The company also aims to provide customers with a complete range of complementary products from livestock care product and even now stocking clothing, lifestyle products, car equipment and more.

Tractor Supply Company also owns a chain of animal and pet stores in the Northwest Pacific and Hawaii known as Del’s Feed and Farm Supply.
