Yanmar Company Ltd, Japan specializes in the manufacturing and distribution of agricultural machinery, engines and other products. The company is one of Japan’s top agricultural machinery brands, alongside Kubota and Iseki & Co, and has long dominated Japan’s compact tractor market.
The Yanmar Co. was established nearly a century ago in 1912 by Magokichi Yamaoka. The company became popular after developing the first powered rice huller. Soon after, they also started exporting kerosene engines. The company began mass-producing small diesel engines in 1947 for small fishing vessels.
The Yanmar Company won the Demming Prize in 1968 due to its high standards in production quality. In addition this, Yanmar tractor engines are produced at a rate of just over 2 engines per minute, which is the fastest speed in the entire diesel industry.
The Yanmar Company added another feather in their cap when the American tractor giant, John Deere Co. began using Yanmar exclusively to produce their compact/utility tractors and engines in the 1980s. Under this contract more than 100,000 engines were shipped to John Deere by 1986.
Due to their growing popularity, John Deere outsourced part of their tractor production to Yanmar. This started a successful trend for Yanmar, and a lot of other dealerships also started outsourcing their tractor productions to the Yanmar Company.
